But as viewers got more emotionally invested\u2014and as syndication and repeats grew\u2014there came a need for finality.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/74906\/13-fun-facts-about-newhart-unless-we-only-dreamed-them\" target=\"_self\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/74906\/13-fun-facts-about-newhart-unless-we-only-dreamed-them\" aria-label=\"Newhart\" data-uw-rm-empty-ctrl=\"\"><em>Newhart<\/em><\/a>\u00a0may have had one of the best, with star Bob Newhart waking up married to his\u00a0<em>The Bob Newhart Show<\/em>\u00a0co-star Suzanne Pleshette and realizing his new series had all been a dream\u2014a climax so memorable that Bryan Cranston later parodied it after the end of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/91302\/25-fascinating-facts-about-breaking-bad\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/91302\/25-fascinating-facts-about-breaking-bad\" aria-label=\"Breaking Bad\" data-uw-rm-empty-ctrl=\"\"><em>Breaking Bad<\/em><\/a>. (His affable\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/73128\/16-fun-facts-about-malcolm-middle\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/73128\/16-fun-facts-about-malcolm-middle\">Malcolm in the Middle<\/a><\/em>\u00a0character, Hal, had apparently dreamed he was a meth dealer.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">And then there are shows that ended with such stunning weirdness that it seems inconceivable viewers could be left feeling anything but befuddled. The finale of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/500756\/tommy-westphall-theory-unified-tv-universe-explained\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/500756\/tommy-westphall-theory-unified-tv-universe-explained\">St. Elsewhere<\/a><\/em>\u00a0proposed the show and its many characters had been all in the mind of a young boy with autism\u2014a theory that called into question the canon of all of television thanks to guest appearances from other television characters.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">That was strange, but in television, it can definitely get stranger. Check out eight other shows that left viewers dazed and confused.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">1.\u00a0<em>Dinosaurs<\/em>\u00a0(1991-1994)<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Ending To The 90s Sitcom Dinosaurs Was Depressing As Hell\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k9b9aoINXzk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This Jim Henson Productions series about a nuclear family of anthropomorphic dinosaurs proved to be a modest hit for ABC. For four seasons, the Sinclairs\u2014father Earl, mother Fran, and kids Robbie, Charlene, and Baby Sinclair\u2014offered an animatronic take on prehistoric life. Baby Sinclair even birthed a popular catchphrase: \u201cI\u2019m the baby. Gotta love me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">While plenty of viewers did,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/68826\/15-things-you-gotta-love-about-dinosaurs\" target=\"_self\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/68826\/15-things-you-gotta-love-about-dinosaurs\" aria-label=\"Dinosaurs\" data-uw-rm-empty-ctrl=\"\"><em>Dinosaurs<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was expensive to produce and not fated for a long run. And while dinosaurs were not known to talk or hold down jobs, the show did take other portions of their existence literally. The series\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2018\/08\/dinosaurs-tvs-saddest-sitcom-finale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2018\/08\/dinosaurs-tvs-saddest-sitcom-finale.html\" aria-label=\"ends - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">ends<\/a>\u00a0with the dinos, ignorant of their effect on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/section\/climate-change\" target=\"_self\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/section\/climate-change\">climate change<\/a>, inviting the Ice Age and thus their own extinction. Earl\u2019s employer uses plant-killing chemicals irresponsibly, setting off a chain reaction of environmental calamities. By the end of the episode, snow is beginning to fall and it&#8217;s obvious that the characters viewers have come to love\u2014including Baby Sinclair\u2014are doomed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">\u201cFrom the moment we first talked about the show, we discussed the idea that it was the domestication of these dinosaurs that made them go extinct,\u201d series co-creator Michael Jacobs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2018\/08\/dinosaurs-tvs-saddest-sitcom-finale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2018\/08\/dinosaurs-tvs-saddest-sitcom-finale.html\" aria-label=\"told Vulture in 2018 - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">told Vulture in 2018<\/a>. \u201cThe thing that human beings knew about dinosaurs was that, in the end, they were extinct, so we always had that idea in the back of our minds. Steve Urkel. Though he was originally conceived as a minor supporting neighbor character for the Winslow family, Urkel became a pop culture sensation. For the finale, which aired on CBS following the show\u2019s network move in 1997, the show abandoned any pretense of grounded reality. In the two-part \u201cLost in Space,\u201d Urkel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbr.com\/family-matters-ended-what-happened-urkel-carl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.cbr.com\/family-matters-ended-what-happened-urkel-carl\/\" aria-label=\"sells - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">sells<\/a>\u00a0a patent to NASA and is shot into space before being briefly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/archive\/1998\/05\/11\/a-tv-nerd-waves-goodbye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/archive\/1998\/05\/11\/a-tv-nerd-waves-goodbye\/\" aria-label=\"marooned - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">marooned<\/a>. Steve nearly runs out of oxygen before he&#8217;s able to return to Earth. (The episode attempts to weave in a subplot of Eddie Winslow, newly minted as a cop, being shot during an altercation, a sharp contrast to Urkel&#8217;s space odyssey.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">While it would have been difficult for the show to top that, it wasn\u2019t\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1998-jul-17-ca-4392-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1998-jul-17-ca-4392-story.html\" aria-label=\"designed - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">designed<\/a>\u00a0as a finale. Producers had gotten word of its cancellation too late to give it a more definitive send-off.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">3.\u00a0<em>M.A.N.T.I.S.<\/em>\u00a0(1994-1995)<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[CULT TV] M.A.N.T.I.S. INTRO\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4n2qVBv0yi0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">Before the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/648249\/best-superhero-movies-of-all-time-rotten-tomatoes\" target=\"_self\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/648249\/best-superhero-movies-of-all-time-rotten-tomatoes\">superhero movie<\/a>\u00a0and television explosion of the new century, comic book-style adventures were few and far between. One exception was\u00a0<em>M.A.N.T.I.S.<\/em>, a Fox series that ran for one season and featured Carl Lumbly as paralyzed scientist Dr. Miles Hawkins, who regains the ability to walk\u2014and resist bullets\u2014with the aid of an enhanced suit. (The Mechanically Augmented Neuro Transmitter Interception System, for the acronym-curious.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-17\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\"><em>M.A.N.T.I.S.<\/em>\u00a0came under fire early on for some puzzling\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/news\/os-xpm-1994-08-26-9408250191-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/news\/os-xpm-1994-08-26-9408250191-story.html\" aria-label=\"casting - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">casting<\/a>\u00a0decisions. In the television movie that launched it, Lumbly was aided by characters played by Black actors. In the series, the characters had been swapped out for white confidantes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-18\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">It was perhaps no great loss when the show was canceled, though a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.okgazette.com\/oklahoma\/mantis-the-complete-series\/Content?oid=2950246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.okgazette.com\/oklahoma\/mantis-the-complete-series\/Content?oid=2950246\" aria-label=\"decision - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">decision<\/a>\u00a0to have Lumbly face off against a giant dinosaur was in sharp contrast to an otherwise grounded premise. (The dinosaur was also mostly invisible, presumably to save on special effects.) To fend off the beast, Hawkins sets off an explosion, killing himself and friend Leora Maxwell (Galyn G\u00f6rg) in the process. The end.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">While\u00a0<em>M.A.N.T.I.S.<\/em>\u00a0may have fallen flat, Lumbly did see some form of superhero redemption. He appeared on the Disney+ Marvel series\u00a0<em>The Falcon and the Winter Soldier<\/em>\u00a0in 2021,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/arts-entertainment\/2021\/04\/29\/carl-lumbly-falcon-winter-soldier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/arts-entertainment\/2021\/04\/29\/carl-lumbly-falcon-winter-soldier\/\" aria-label=\"playing - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">playing<\/a>\u00a0Isiah Bradley, an early recipient of Captain America\u2019s super soldier serum.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inline-text-20\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">4.\u00a0<em>ALF<\/em>\u00a0(1986-1990)<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alf - Original Ending - &quot;To Be Continued&quot;\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YCXu-FRPrO8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Nothing was more endemic of 1980s television than\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/55889\/25-fun-facts-about-alf\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/55889\/25-fun-facts-about-alf\">ALF<\/a><\/em>, a sitcom about a furry alien from the planet Melmac who moves in with the Tanner family to avoid detection. (Shooting\u00a0<em>ALF<\/em>, which was a puppet, proved\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/86458\/out-world-oral-history-alf\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/86458\/out-world-oral-history-alf\">problematic<\/a>\u00a0for his human co-stars, who often had to sidestep holes in the floor to allow for the puppeteering.)<\/p>\n<p>For the 1990 series finale, \u201cConsider Me Gone,\u201d ALF is able to intercept a radio signal from others of his kind who are colonizing a \u201cNew Melmac.\u201d Even though it means saying goodbye to his adoptive family, ALF decides to join his fellow alien life forms\u2014but is instead\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/alf-final-episode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/alf-final-episode\/\" aria-label=\"apprehended - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">apprehended<\/a>\u00a0by government officials eager to find out more about the alien. The show\u2019s producers expected a fifth season\u2014this one set on a military base\u2014but didn\u2019t get one. The impression viewers have is one of ALF possibly doomed to a life of imprisonment. Ewing<\/a>\u00a0(Larry Hagman) or the it-was-all-a-dream season provided by presumed-dead\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/79815\/bad-dreams-when-bobby-ewing-returned-dallas\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/79815\/bad-dreams-when-bobby-ewing-returned-dallas\">Bobby Ewing<\/a>\u00a0(Patrick Duffy).<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-27\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">No less memorable was the series\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/dallas-final-episode-1991\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/dallas-final-episode-1991\/\" aria-label=\"finale - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">finale<\/a>\u00a0in which J.R. contemplates the many selfish and otherwise morally corrupt choices he\u2019s made in pursuit of wealth and self-satisfaction throughout his life. The two-parter is a riff on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/60792\/25-wonderful-facts-about-its-wonderful-life\" target=\"_self\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/60792\/25-wonderful-facts-about-its-wonderful-life\" aria-label=\"It\u2019s a Wonderful Life\" data-uw-rm-empty-ctrl=\"\"><em>It\u2019s a Wonderful Life<\/em><\/a>, except J.R. slowly realizes people in his life would have been far better off without him. &#8220;Sue Ellen making it on her own,&#8221; J.R. says, aghast anyone could thrive without him.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-28\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">Egged on by a malevolent spirit named Adam that appears to him in a mirror\u2014who is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/dallas-jr-returns-movie-how-jr-survived\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/dallas-jr-returns-movie-how-jr-survived\/\" aria-label=\"implied - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">implied<\/a>\u00a0to be a demon, thanks to a not-very-subtle red suit and glowing red eyes\u2014a despondent J.R. appears to take his own life, though that was retconned in subsequent made-for-television\u00a0<em>Dallas<\/em>\u00a0movies.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inline-text-29\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">6.<em>\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>\u00a0(1974-1983)<\/h2>\n<p id=\"inline-text-30\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1\">Based on the bestselling, semi-autobiographical book series by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/641813\/laura-ingalls-wilder-little-house-on-the-prairie-facts\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/641813\/laura-ingalls-wilder-little-house-on-the-prairie-facts\">Laura Ingalls Wilder<\/a>,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/70752\/17-pioneering-facts-about-little-house-prairie\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/70752\/17-pioneering-facts-about-little-house-prairie\">Little House on the Prairie<\/a><\/em>\u00a0offered viewers in the \u201870s a look at frontier life in the late 1800s. This would probably be the last place where you\u2019d expect an explosion set piece worthy of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/626785\/arnold-schwarzenegger-actor-facts\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/626785\/arnold-schwarzenegger-actor-facts\">Arnold Schwarzenegger<\/a>, but the show provided it in the form of one final TV movie,\u00a0<em>Little House on the Prairie: The Last Farewell<\/em>. In the film, the town of Walnut Grove is blown to bits so that it doesn\u2019t fall into the hands of a land baron.
