With loads of sass and style,\u00a0Clueless<\/em>\u00a0won the hearts of a generation and became one of the most beloved coming-of-age comedies of all time. But even if you\u2019re a total Betty or Baldwin, you probably don\u2019t know all the juicy details behind\u00a0Clueless<\/em>, which arrived in theaters on July 19, 1995.<\/p>\n Writer-director Amy Heckerling found her inspiration for Cher\u2019s bumbling journey of love from Austen\u2019s classic 1815 novel\u00a0Emma<\/em>. \u201cI remembered reading\u00a0Emma<\/em>\u00a0in college and being struck at how much it reminded me of old TV shows like\u00a0Gidget<\/em>,\u201d Heckerling\u00a0recounted<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0Entertainment Weekly<\/em>. \u201cThere\u2019s something so basic about it.\u201d<\/p>\n Back in the early \u201990s, 20th Century Fox was shopping for a sitcom about cool teenagers (no nerds). So Heckerling pitched them\u00a0No Worries<\/em>, which she had conceived with eventual\u00a0Clueless<\/em>\u00a0producer Twink Caplan (who would go on to play Miss Geist). But Fox feared no one would care about a show with so many girls, so Heckerling went back to the drawing board, reshaping her characters into a feature screenplay with early drafts called\u00a0I Was A Teenage Teenager<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Clueless in California<\/em>.<\/p>\n Heckerling wanted to spin her combination of\u00a0Emma<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Gidget<\/em>\u00a0in the setting of a Beverly Hills high school, which she envisioned as a \u201chyper-pastel fantasy place.\u201d To create the movie\u2019s totally quotable dialogue and\u00a0slang<\/a>, Heckerling sat in on classes to get a feel for how teens in the \u201990s talked. But Cher\u2019s classic \u201cAs if!\u201d actually came from the lesbian community. \u201cAny outsider group is going to create their own language\u2014whether it’s homosexual, black, prisoners, or cab drivers,\u201d Heckerling explained. \u201cYou just have to be willing to open your ears and listen.\u201d<\/p>\nClueless\u00a0<\/em>is modern-day Jane Austen.<\/h2>\n
