Greenland allies vow action if Trump moves to seize world\u2019s largest island<\/h1>\n

A German government source told the Reuters news agency that Berlin was \u2018closely working together\u2019 with other allies.<\/em><\/p>\n

European leaders, including in France and Germany, have announced they are working on a plan in the event the United States follows through on its threat to take over\u00a0Greenland<\/a>\u00a0as tensions soar.<\/p>\n

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot told France Inter radio on Wednesday that while nations want to act if the US moves to\u00a0seize<\/a>\u00a0Greenland from an ally, Denmark, they want to do so \u201ctogether with our European partners\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI myself was on the phone with the [US] Secretary of State [Marco Rubio] yesterday\u2026 He discarded the idea that what just happened in Venezuela could happen in Greenland,\u201d Barrot said.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, the United States \u2013 using fighter jets, attack helicopters, and special forces \u2013 abducted Venezuela\u2019s President Nicolas Maduro, bringing him to New York City to be tried for alleged drug trafficking.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump\u2019s decision to greenlight the\u00a0abduction<\/a>\u00a0of Maduro led to widespread condemnation and fear that Greenland, which the president has previously said should be part of Washington\u2019s security apparatus, could be\u00a0forcibly taken<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But since then, European allies have rallied behind Greenland\u2019s sovereignty, saying the country belongs to its people.<\/p>\n

\u2018Sensible dialogue \u2013 now\u2019<\/h2>\n

Johannes Koskinen, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Finland\u2019s parliament, called for the issue to be raised within NATO.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Allies should] address whether something needs to be done and whether the United States should be brought into line in the sense that it cannot disregard jointly agreed plans in order to pursue its own power ambitions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Denmark\u2019s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and his Greenlandic counterpart, Vivian Motzfeldt, requested an urgent meeting with Rubio to discuss the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would like to add some nuance to the conversation,\u201d Rasmussen wrote in a social media post. \u201cThe shouting match must be replaced by a more sensible dialogue. Now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Denmark has warned that any move to take Greenland by force would mean \u201ceverything would stop\u201d, including NATO and 80 years of close security links.<\/p>\n

Greenland\u2019s government will join a meeting between Rubio and Danish officials next week following renewed US claims on the Arctic island, its foreign minister said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u200cThe European Union will support Greenland and \u200dDenmark when \u200dneeded and will not accept violations of international law no matter where they occur, European Council President Antonio Costa said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn Greenland, allow me to be \u200bclear: Greenland belongs to its people. Nothing \u200dcan be decided about Denmark and about Greenland without Denmark or without Greenland,\u201d Costa said in a speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe European Union cannot accept \u200cviolations of international law \u2013 whether in Cyprus, Latin America, Greenland, Ukraine, or Gaza. Europe will remain \u200da firm and unwavering champion of international law and multilateralism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Control of Greenland<\/h2>\n

Greenland \u2013 the world\u2019s largest island, with a population of 57,000 people \u2013 is located between Europe and North America. Since 2019, during Trump\u2019s first term, the president has raised the idea of controlling Greenland, saying it would\u00a0benefit US security.<\/a><\/p>\n

So far, Trump has not ruled out using force to take the island.<\/p>\n

Rubio told reporters on Wednesday that Trump\u2019s intention is to buy Greenland. \u201cThat\u2019s always been the president\u2019s intent from the very beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n

House US House Speaker Mike Johnson said he hasn\u2019t heard talk of sending the military into Greenland and the US is \u201clooking at diplomatic channels\u201d.<\/p>\n

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump and his national security team have \u201cactively discussed\u201d the option of buying Greenland.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe views it in the best interest of the United States to deter\u00a0Russian and Chinese aggression<\/a>\u00a0in the Arctic region. And so that\u2019s why his team is currently talking about what a potential purchase would look like,\u201d Leavitt told reporters.<\/p>\n

Neither Leavitt nor Rubio ruled out the use of force. But Leavitt said, \u201cThe president\u2019s first option, always, has been diplomacy.\u201d<\/p>\n
