Mexico City, September 12, 2025 – Alicia Matías Teodoro, 49, died after saving her granddaughter during a gas pipeline explosion on the La Concordia Bridge in Iztapalapa. The woman suffered burns over 90% of her body and was hospitalized at Magdalena de las Salinas Hospital, where she did not survive.

During the accident, Alicia covered her granddaughter with her body, who suffered minor injuries. Her brave act made her a symbol of love and heroism in Mexico. The photograph of Alicia amid the wreckage went viral, sparking tributes on social media.

She worked as a checker at the Santa Martha bus station and cared for her granddaughter while her daughter worked. Her loss has moved the entire country.
