I’ve been married for almost three years . Since my husband is an only child, we lived with his mother in her large three-story home on the outskirts of the city.

Rosa, my mother-in-law, had just turned fifty. You’d think that stage of life would bring calm and family focus—but instead, she filled the house with constant tension through her immature, unpredictable behavior. She was obsessed with her appearance, spending hours every day on makeup, skincare, and beauty routines. Even for a quick trip to the nearby shop, she’d dress up with perfume, heels, and sometimes even a wig.

At first, I assumed she was just trying to feel young again after losing her husband years earlier… until she shocked us all by announcing she was getting married again.

Her fiancé, Hugo, was only twenty-eight—polite and well-groomed, but clearly unemployed. My husband Carlos strongly objected, but Rosa shut him down immediately. “I spent my whole life living for others,” she said sharply. “Now I’m living for myself.”

Two weeks later, she held a small wedding with just a few relatives. My husband chose to stay quiet, hoping to avoid a family war.

Right after the ceremony, Rosa and “Uncle Hugo” disappeared into their bedroom—and stayed there. For an entire week. Every time I knocked, she’d call out, “Just leave it there, dear. I’ll eat later.”

By the eighth day, the food outside the door was untouched, and the room was still locked. A terrible feeling settled in my chest. When I finally forced the door open, what I saw made my blood turn cold .
